Medicine Dosages

In general, read and follow the label instructions when giving medicine to your child. Your CMP Pediatric providers suggest the following dosages when taking medicines. Never give adult medicine to children (even in smaller doses). Please call your CMP provider office if you have any questions or complications.

Tylenol for headache, fever, and pain (give every 4 hours as needed)

12-17 lbs. 0.8 ml Tylenol drops
18-23 lbs. 1.2 ml Tylenol drops
24-35 lbs. 1 tsp., of elixir or 2 chewable tablets (80 mg each)
36-47 lbs. 1 ½ tsp. elixir or 3 chewable tablets (80 mg each)
6-8 years 2 tsp., elixir or 4 chewable tablets (80 mg each)
9-10 years 3 tsp., elixir or 5-6 chewable tablets (80 mg each)

Cough and decongestant medicine is not necessary, but is okay to use to reduce symptoms and decrease discomfort. Medicines such as Robitussin Pediatric Cough and Cold Elixir.

6-12 months ¼ to ½ tsp., every 6 hours as needed.
12-24 months ½ to ¾ tsp., every 6 hours as needed.
2-3 years ¾ to 1 tsp., every 6 hours as needed
4-5 years 1 to1 ½ tsp., every 6 hours as needed
6-12 years 2tsp., every 6 hours as needed
over 12 years 4 tsp., (or 2 tsp., Robitussin Maximum Strength cough and cold.)

Other cough/decongestants brands are available over the counter – read the labels.

Tylenol and cough/cold medicines do not shorten the illness and they do not prevent complications. Antibiotics do not help, except for certain situations. Flu vaccinations prevent the flu. Resting and drinking lots of fluids does help.
