Advance Directives

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO FILL OUT AN ADVANCE DIRECTIVE?

What would happen if you are unable to communicate the treatment you wanted? For example, what if you were knocked unconscious in a car accident? Who would you want to make decisions for you? If you’re lucky, someone who truly holds your best interests in mind would ask the court to become your guardian. But what if no one stepped forward? By recording your preferences in advance, your loved ones will know what you would want in this type of situation.

Modern medicine offers more treatments than ever before. Because of advances in medicine, there exist many more alternatives than ever before. Without making your wishes known ahead of time, someone could make a medical decision you may not want. What if you are in an irreversible coma? Or what if someone decided to pull you off life – sustaining equipment. Is this what you would want done?

These are examples about which we prefer not to think and we hope they never occur, but you can relieve the stress faced which could be faced by loved ones, should a tragedy occur, by taking time to make these decisions today.
