Advance Directives

THINKING IT THROUGH

Decide what directives you would like to include in your Advance Directive?  Just choose whatever is appropriate for you. Do you merely want to instruct a doctor to withhold or withdraw procedures that will artificially prolong your life? Or do you want to appoint an agent who will make broad decisions about medical treatments based on your wishes? You may choose to do both and you can do so legally in California with an Advance Directive.

Ask yourself these questions:

Do I want to live as long as possible, regardless of the circumstances?
Would I want my life prolonged if I were in an irreversible coma?
If terminally ill, would I want life – sustaining procedures to artificially delay my death?
Would I want my life prolonged if I were in terrible pain? Would I want a blood transfusion or surgery if unconscious? Do I want to be tube-fed?
If I were about to die , how important would the following be to me:
  • Religious beliefs & practices?
  • Being able to make decisions?
  • Dying without pain and suffering?
  • Being with my loved ones?
Do I want to be cared for in a nursing home?
Would I authorize an autopsy?
Do I want to donate my body or specific parts to science or for organ transplant?  If so, you may want to specify all of these choices in your AD.
